As the chaßis number, the engine number contains information on its date of manufacture. The place of manufacture is not encoded though. This is not neceßary, since all Fiesta engines were manufactured at one place only. The smaller engines (1.0 LC/HC and 1.1) were built in Valencia (Spain), the 1.3 and 1.6 engines most probably in Dagenham (UK).

Apart from the engine number (1), there is also the engine type code (2, see Engines). If and in which way (3) contains the date of manufacture as well, this time encoded in 3 letters, in unclear.

The engine number can be decoded as follows:2
Positions 01 - 01: Year of manufacture: see table below.
Positions 02 - 02: Month of manufacture: see table below.
Positions 03 - 07: 5-digit consecutive production number.
Example of an engine number BD99999: An engine manufactured in November 1981 with production number 99999.
